Kerryn Leigh Vollmer
B. Prim Ed (Wits), B.Ed Hons (UNISA)

Kerryn started working at RADMASTE at the beginning of 2008. Prior to that she had been teaching Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy, and also spent 2 years teaching Maths in Cambridgeshire, England where she developed a keen interest for Statistics and Probability.  She was a member of the Maths4Stats team and trained with STATSSA.

Kerryn was involved in several formal and non-formal Maths projects at RADMASTE during her time here.  She also became a member of the Management and Executive Committees. She assisted with the authoring of different maths publications and presented at the AMESA conferences on several occasions. Kerryn represented RADMASTE in the EPU-FET Colleges Project, the mathematics part of which was funded by USAID.

RADMASTE thanks Kerryn for her important contribution to the maths sector, and wishes her success with her new interests in Cape Town.

Micky Lavery
HDE (JCE), FDE (College for Further Education and Training), BSc (Hons – Mathematics Education) (Wits)

Micky Lavery joined RADMASTE in January 2010. She first studied at JCE where she attained her Higher Diploma in Education. She has a Further Diploma in Education (Chemistry and Physics) from the College for Further Education and Training as well as a BSc Honours in Maths Education from WITS. She has taught High School Maths and Science and was a Maths Head of Department from 1997 up until she left teaching in 2009. She has completed both an assessor’s and moderator’s course through the IEB. She has been a matric maths marker for both the GDE and IEB, a cluster leader for the GDE, and portfolio moderator for the GDE and IEB.  Micky has been involved in EXPO for Young Scientists since 1984 and judges at EXPO annually. Whilst at RADMASTE she has trained GET Curriculum Advisers in Limpopo and ACE first year students at Wits Education Campus, as well as educators in the Gauteng Teachers’ Mathematics InSET Programme. 
 

Rencia Lourens
BA (Ed) (RAU); BSc (Hons - Mathematics Education) (Wits)

Rencia was born in Kempton Park and obtained a BA (Ed) majoring in Mathematics and Psychology at RAU. She completed her BSc (Hons) in Mathematics Education at Wits in 2004 and 2005. She is currently completing an MSc in Mathematics Education.

She taught Grade 8 to 12 mathematics at Stoffberg Hoërskool in Brakpan for three years, then also for three years at Jeugland Hoërskool. In 1986 she was appointed as HOD at Rhodesfield Technical High School. During her time at Rhodesfield she was involved in several teacher development programmes as well as matric improvement programmes. She also served as examiner for the GDE for Functional Mathematics. In 1997 Rencia was appointed as Subject Facilitator and later Head of Teaching and Learning in the (then) District N3. Several winter schools and teacher development programmes were launched during that time. In 2000 Rencia was appointed as Mathematics teacher at Crawford College, Pretoria and in 2005 she moved to Abbotts College, Northcliff. She started at RADMASTE in January 2010 and was involved in the ACE for Mathematical Literacy, the training of GET Limpopo Curriculum Advisors as well as the Gauteng Teachers’ Mathematics InSET Programme. 

Rencia continues to assist RADMASTE with FET Maths Short Courses for the CIGRÉ Project.

Makgoshi Manyatshe
BA (Unin), BED (Wits), MED(RAU), BSc. Honours (Maths Education) Wits, BA Honours (HRD) RAU

Makgoshi was born in Limpopo. She obtained her BA degree and University Education Diploma at the University of the North. She started teaching high school Mathematics in 1986 at Tshivhase High School in Venda. She relocated to Soweto and taught at Musi High School for 19 years. She was promoted to Head of Department of Mathematics at the same school in 1999. She left teaching in 2006 and worked for a Maths NGO for two years as a field trainer and Project Coordinator. In August 2008 she joined the RADMASTE Centre as a Research and Development Officer (Mathematics).

 

Joao De Menezes
MSc (Mathematics), BEd (Hons) (Wits)

J. de MenezesPrior to joining RADMASTE in February 2012, Joao was a teacher for 8 years at Verney College, a private school in the south of Johannesburg. He taught Maths, Maths Lit., English, Geography and Physical Sciences to Grade 10 – 12 learners. He applied for a position at RADMASTE because of the opportunity to work with teachers from all across the country. For Joao, this has been a learning curve that has made him grow as a professional.   His roles at RADMASTE include: working with teachers on CAPS implementation for Mathematics; classroom visits in order to assist teachers in professional practice; development of assessment tools for both Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy; as well as running workshops for content development in Mathematics.

Ntombikayise Patience Mthembu
STD (East Rand College of Education); FDE (SACTE); B.Ed Honours (RAU)

Patience was born in Katlehong and obtained her Secondary Teacher’s Diploma majoring in Mathematics and Language at East Rand College of Education. She has a Further Diploma in Education from South African College of Education as well as B.Ed Honours from RAU.

She taught mathematics and language from 1989 at Sijabulile Secondary School and was appointed Deputy Principal for curriculum in 1999. During her time at Sijabulile she was involved in school governance, school development programmes, teacher development programmes and matric improvement programmes.  In October 2005 she moved to Mpontsheng Secondary School.

In April 2007 she resigned and joined a Maths NGO for three years as a field trainer and later she served as training and research unit manager. She worked as a consultant for RADMASTE in 2010.

Patience joined RADMASTE Centre as a Research and Development Officer (Mathematics) in January 2011.


Jackie Scheiber
BSc (Wits), TTHD (JCE)

 Jackie Scheiber has been working at RADMASTE since 1994.  She is a high school maths teacher by training with a BSc from Wits University and a TTHD from the Johannesburg College of Education.  She has been involved in the development of textbooks for Intermediate learners Classroom Mathematics for Grades 4, 5 and 6, Senior Phase learners Outcomes Mathematics for Grades 7, 8 and 9 and Classroom Mathematics Grade 7, as well as for FET Classroom Mathematics Grades 10, 11 and 12 and Maths Literacy for the Classroom Grades 10, 11 and 12. 

Jackie spends most of her time writing, but manages to still run workshops with teachers every now and then. She is an active member of AMESA (Association for Maths Education of South Africa), and has been a member of the Executive of AMESA (Gauteng) since 1994, having held many positions on this committee, including Chairperson of AMESA (Gauteng). She is a member of RADMASTE’s Executive Committee (EXCO) and Management Committee (MANCO), and is in charge of the maths sector of RADMASTE.

 

Welile Mildred Simelane
STD (William Pitcher College); BEd (UNISWA); MSc (University of Zimbabwe)

Welile SimelaneWelile was born in Manzini, Swaziland. She obtained her Secondary Teacher’s Diploma in 1992, and a Bachelor of Education Degree in 2001 from the University of Swaziland. She holds a Masters Degree in Mathematical modelling and is currently doing her Master of Education in Mathematics Education.  Welile has taught mathematics at senior phase and FET phase, as well as tertiary level.  She joined RADMASTE as a Research and Development Officer in February 2012.

Prof Paul Laridon
B.Sc; B.A.; D.Ed (Mathematics Education)

Paul is one of the founding directors of RADMASTE and is well known in mathematics education nationally and internationally. In 2000 Paul was recognised for his contributions to mathematics education by being given the status of Honorary Member of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA). The Classroom Mathematics series of school textbooks was initiated by Paul in the 1980s and he co-ordinates the continued development of this series. Paul was a member  of the Ministerial Project Committee for the development of the National Curriculum Statements for the Further Education and Training Band. Paul’s responsibilities to this Committee had particular reference to the subjects Mathem

 

 

Gayle Staegemann
BSc UED (Natal)

Gayle Staegemann is a retired maths teacher with 25 years of high school teaching experience. She has a BSc qualification with a maths major and a U.E.D. teaching diploma. She held the post of Head of Department Mathematics at Sandringham High School for six years and, after retirement, for a year at Bishop Bavin High School. She later worked full-time for Kagiso TV writing Maths video material for use in Ethiopia.

She joined the RADMASTE staff as a consultant writer in 2006, and has written part of the Grade 12 Maths Literacy Textbook. She has also developed material for the Maths ACE courses, both GET and FET, as well as the Maths Literacy ACE. She has authored a workbook for the Department of Education, to be used by learners at NCV2 level.
